Alan has over 45 years of experience as a practicing Architect with specific expertise in Education and Community projects as well as effective user engagement and strategic master planning. He was a founding partner of IID Architects in 1984 which grew from just 2 partners into a thriving Limited Company of 25 staff with five directors. IID was built on substantial portfolio of projects for mainly User Clients which is where Alan's main expertise lies. He now works as an independent consultant.
Alan is a chartered Architect and Client (Design) Advisor. He has been the project leader for projects of widely varying scales including major redevelopments and has prepared numerous strategic master plans and project briefs. His experience as a principal with IID has focused predominantly on school and community projects. He has experience of working with a wide range of schools and colleges within the state and independent sectors and from early years through to FE; as well as with a variety of community groups including a wide range of Churches.
In 1982 Alan was a principal member of the team which won an international competition for the new Sir Joseph Banks Building in Kew Gardens, a major earth sheltered and sustainable exhibition and research building integrated into a sensitive landscaped setting. More recently he has expanded his skills in PassivHaus design ( ie fabric first, sustainable and measurable ) through his involvement as designer for an earth-sheltered house in the Cotwolds which secured planning consent against the odds primarily through its sustainability (PassivHaus) credentials.
He was an external examiner for RIBA Part 3 (Professional Practice) at Westminster University for over 10 years until he retired in 2018, was an examiner for the Part 3 courses at the University of Bath and has lectured at both Westminster and Oxford Brookes Universities on their Architectural Practice and Management Courses. He was also a tutor for the part 3 course at Westminster University and at Kingston University for 2 years in the mid 1980’s.
He received a Masters Degree from Sheffield University in 2001 in Design and Brief Management which relates to Design Process rather than Design Product. Hence his particular interest in Project Briefing and Strategic Master Plans.
Following a successful 30+ year career with IID he established brownA consulting in March 2016 of which he is Owner/Director.
